The new control tower at Christchurch Airport has been completed and handed over to Airways NZ Ltd and is now operational.

The tower is located on the car park side of the terminal but at over 45m high the level 13 Cab provides air traffic controllers with excellent views of both main runways.

The building also provides air conditioned office accommodation for Airways staff, plus equipment and plant rooms.

Cosgroves provided mechanical, electrical and fire services consultancy for this landmark project which was carried out in partnership with Hawkins Construction.

Integrating the services into a tall building that reduces in size as it gets closer to ground level was a challenge, but this was successfully achieved by detailed coordination with the contractor, architect and structural engineers.

The single staircase also provided challenges for the fire engineers to satisfy means of escape requirements. These were met by combination of stair pressurisation and a lobby relief systems plus standard fire protection systems. A Risk Evaluation was completed to prove that adequate safety levels were achieved for the Fire Engineered Design.
