Fire Design Engineer

An opportunity has arisen to join a leading and well respected multi-discipline, building services engineering consultancy working on projects throughout New Zealand.

Based in our Queenstown office, the successful candidate will provide fire engineering support to the Southland, Central Otago and Otago region including attendance at local project meetings, carrying out site inspections and liaising with local Clients, Architects and other Engineers to deliver fire engineering advice on projects. The role will be supported by the other Cosgroves offices in Christchurch and Auckland.

We have a strong and growing workload with current projects including hotels, large format retail, health care, aged care, sports facilities and airports.

To succeed in this role, ideally you have:

  • At least 3 – 5 years’ industry experience and are a team player and self-starter.
  • A basic understanding of fire engineering safety design principles and related NZ Regulations is required. Some previous experience with Fire Safety matters including means of escape, fire protection systems, fire separations, and passive fire treatment systems. Experience in applying the NZBC ‘acceptable solutions’ C/ASx documents to the built environment within NZ would be an advantage, as would specific engineering design (C/VM2).
  • Experience in construction observation and contract management including familiarity with preparing and managing documentation including RFI’s, CAN’s etc. Good attention to detail and observation skills on site are required.
  • Effective communication skills including technical report writing and verbal communication. Comfortable attending meetings and talking confidently within limits of knowledge and experience. To demonstrate good awareness of when to seek support advice within the Fire Engineering team.
  • Capability to work effectively and efficiently in a remote location, including recognising and utilising resource provided by other offices. The successful candidate will demonstrate that they can work effectively in isolation in co-ordination with the wider knowledge and expertise of a National consultancy.
  • Capabilities to use computer pdf drawing, Microsoft Office Suite applications, and cloud-based document management systems
  • A related professional engineering tertiary degree with experience in fire building services design and on site observation/attendance would be an advantage.
