The Christchurch Town Hall Redevelopment

The Christchurch Town Hall Redevelopment

The project

The Christchurch Town Hall was severely damaged following the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. Following a detailed assessment process that Cosgroves contributed to, the Christchurch City Council elected to repair and refurbish the iconic building at which stage Cosgroves were retained to provide the electrical building services engineering. All of the electrical and ancillary electrical services throughout the building were replaced with completely new systems. The heritage light fittings were refurbished and upgraded to LED lighting sources.

The Christchurch Town Hall is predominantly a performing arts project. It includes the main Auditorium, the James Hay Theatre, the Limes Room, Conference Rooms, Function Room, Foyer, Bars, and back of house spaces (including Green Rooms, etc). The James Hay has a significant fly tower and proscenium which presented many engineering challenges.

Cosgroves worked very closely with the Theatre Consultant (Shand Shelton) in the design and installation of the theatre lighting way-lines and dimmers, and production communication systems (DMX networks, show intercoms, production data cabling, etc).
