CDHB Christchurch Outpatients Building

Improving Health Outcomes with Modern Facilities

The award-winning CDHB Christchurch Outpatients Building is notable for its many capabilities, providing a wide array of care and rehabilitation services. The main purpose of the structure is to equip healthcare professionals with the facilities they need to provide their vital services.

Incorporating strong elements of sustainable design, a visually striking façade, and industry-leading seismic reinforcement, all within a tight budget and strict timeline – Everyone involved certainly had their work cut out for them.

Understanding and Meeting Complex Requirements

More than just designing features and equipment, our engineers envisioned the function of each space they worked on. This enabled us to adapt our designs to suit the unique requirements of healthcare facilities, resulting in better environments for patients and professionals.

·         Exceptionally efficient ventilation systems, providing clean, temperature-controlled air to vulnerable patients.

·         Specialised electrical, fire, and electrical systems designed for high-priority clinical services. These include dental, haematology, vascular, and neurology.

·         Allied health services such as physiotherapy, speech language therapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, and social work.

How a Collaborative Environment Facilitated Success

With a veteran project team put forward by ourselves and the rest of the design team, all were aware that clashes and other issues inevitably occur with every project. With this in mind, we took a proactive approach in collaborating with stakeholders, identifying potential problems and committing resources to overcome these quickly. With a shared vision from all involved, we were able to deliver each stage under budget and on schedule.

The quality of our communication and interaction is strongly evidenced by the project’s win of the New Zealand Building Industry 2019 Interdisciplinary Collaboration Award; and the following feedback:

“…  The key to the design and delivery of the Christchurch Outpatients building was the collaboration of the design team and the extension of that collaborative culture to the main contractor…. The highly complex building was a challenge for all those involved in its realisation, the project brief was demanding due to there being no entertainment of cost over runs (and) an immovable handover date, arduous seismic and fire specifications…”
