The University of Canterbury RSIC is an undergraduate teaching hub with a range of physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology and other science laboratories and flat-floor technology enabled teaching spaces clustered around a large reception area used to showcase the science and innovation work being done at the university.
This six storey building was damaged in the 2010 / 2011 earthquakes and as part of the remediation process went through a full refurbishment. Upon completion the building was renamed Matariki. The building is the new hub for front line services to all University of Canterbury students, and is also the home of the University Council and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. Key design features include: 60 minute fire separations, egress routes, building fire hydrant system, and fire detection and alarm system. It also included new electrical installations including a full lighting upgrade.
